Lontara is a typical writing of the Bugis-Makassar people that has existed for hundreds of years. Lontara is a cultural art of the Bugis community in the form of traditional script. Derived from a type of leaf typical of South Sulawesi called lontar until then the local community named it Lontara. The Lontara script, which is famous until now, cannot be separated from the important role of Daeng Pamatte. He was a government official at the time of the 9th King of Gowa, Karaeng Tumapa'risi Kallonna. It was from the hands of Daeng Pamatte that the letters Lontara Makassar, and the book Lontara Bilang Gowa Tallo were created. The initial story of the birth of the Lontara script, starting with Karaeng Tumapa'risi's order to create Makassar letters, then in subsequent developments Daeng Pamatte's Lontara continued to increase until the 19th century until the number became 19 with the addition of the letter 'ha'. Furthermore, it was further developed for the purposes of the Bugis language, namely ngka, mpa, nra, and nca into 23 letters. Of these 23, what was finally known as the Bugis Makassar Lontara Script.

Lontara merupakan tulisan khas masyarakat suku Bugis-Makassar yang telah ada sejak ratusan tahun yang lalu.Lontara merupakan seni budaya masyarakat Bugis berupa aksara tradisional. Berasal dari sejenis daun khas Sulawesi Selatan yang disebut lontar hingga kemudian masyarakat setempat menamakan Lontara. Aksara Lontara yang terkenal hingga sekarang tidak lepas dari peran penting dari Daeng Pamatte. Ia merupakan pejabat pemerintah pada masa Raja Gowa ke-9, Karaeng Tumapa’risi Kallonna.Dari tangan Daeng Pamatte inilah tercipta huruf Lontara Makassar, dan buku Lontara Bilang Gowa Tallo. Kisah awal dari lahirnya Aksara Lontara, bermula dari perintah Karaeng Tumapa’risi menciptakan huruf Makassar, Kemudian pada perkembangan selanjutnya Lontara ciptaan Daeng Pamatte terus meningkat sampai abad 19 hingga jumlahnya menjadi 19 dengan tambahan huruf ‘ha’. Selanjutnya dikembangkan lagi untuk keperluan bahasa Bugis, yaitu ngka, mpa, nra, dan nca menjadi 23 huruf. Dari 23 itu pula yang akhirnya dikenal dengan nama Aksara Lontara Bugis Makassar.
