Description(s)
A collection of stories that raises the cultural locality of Bugis Makassar, Toraja and brings up LGBT issues (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender). Ranging from stories about bissu, conflicts behind funeral ceremonies in Toraja to victims of elopement at Bugis weddings; there is also a story about a virgin woman who was kept chaste to maintain the integrity of the custom and an old virgin who had a feud with a widow because of the death of her husband whose cause was unknown. We can only wander, carrying our heat to go on a journey, departing from sadness to somewhere in the forest. ("The Bright") From the very beginning I learned to write short stories, I was really interested in promoting local culture, introducing the local culture as well as criticizing it. At school I used to learn that culture is something that is outdated and uninteresting. After I migrated, away from the customs in the village, I longed to return, through stories. (Emil Amir)
