Elections: Apathy or what?

Description

In English

Youth have an important role in politics and state administration. However, in Indonesia, many people still consider young people as a group of people who are apathetic, apolitical, or simply a group of voters. In fact, even in the formal political space, data shows that of the total 575 members of the People's Representative Council (DPR) for the 2014-2019 period, only around 4% (or 24 people) are less than 30 years old. Without meaningful participation from young people, democracy will only become an arena for political elections. For democracy to be inclusive, young people must have an active and empowered role as stakeholders and problem solvers in their communities.

Many people in Indonesia have the perception that young age indicates that a person's experience or ability to enter the world of politics is immature. In fact, various studies show that young people have the capacity to lead and build movements. Many young people have proven they are capable of becoming educators, volunteers, and providing input on programs related to various issues such as disaster risk reduction, protecting children and women.

To realize meaningful youth participation, political parties and stakeholders need to pay attention to the diversity of young people and recognize young people as leaders and politicians. Youth must be more than just age; they must be active, innovative and critical. Even though political participation is important, youth must always ensure that the government is responsible in serving the people.
