From Anxiety Turns to Gold: A Mental Health Revolution for the Next Generation
This is a Response to the Kesehatan wikithon
Mental health has long been a scourge in society. Many people think that mental health is not much different from physical health, due to the lack of understanding of mental health in society. Mental health is when someone does not have symptoms of mental disorders. Mentally healthy individuals can function normally in living their lives, especially by learning how to handle stress and deal with future problems.
WHO (World Health Organization) states that mental health is "more than just the absence of disorders or mental health". Based on this statement, it can be concluded that mental health is not only about managing active conditions but also maintaining ongoing happiness. However, there are many triggers for this mental problem. found, among others, stress, anxiety disorders, and depression. The transition from adolescence to adulthood, namely the age of 16-24 years, is a critical period for mental health. Around 6% (14 million) people aged 15 years and over suffer from mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. It can be concluded that the average Indonesian population who experience mental disorders are teenagers. Then the 2007 Riskesdas data showed that 11.6 percent of adults in Indonesia also suffer from emotional mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. This means that 1,740,000 people are currently experiencing emotional mental disorders, around 150,000,000 of the adult population of Indonesia (Ministry of Health, 2007). Current data shows that the number of people suffering from mental health disorders in Indonesia is very large, so that proper handling and treatment must be prioritized. In various parts of Indonesia, there are still inappropriate ways of handling people with mental health disorders. The community must distance sufferers because they are considered strange creatures that can endanger someone's safety. This is disappointing because it can reduce the chances of a sufferer recovering. To eliminate the stigma in society and ensure that sufferers get proper treatment, it is very important to provide information and education to the public about mental health. Mental health is often considered a personal matter, even though the surrounding environment has a big role in shaping a person's psychological condition. In an increasingly complex society, support for mental health must be a shared concern, both in the family environment, workplace, and social community. Then how do we create an environment that supports our mental health? First, build a good relationship with yourself or start with yourself. By starting to build a good relationship with yourself, mental health will begin to form. Understanding your shortcomings and strengths without judging yourself will keep your mental health healthy. Accept that no human being is perfect and mistakes are part of our learning process, then appreciate your own life journey without constantly comparing yourself to others. Second, create a comfortable and safe space. Make sure your home, workplace and environment have a comfortable, clean and orderly atmosphere, so you will feel happier. Provide enough space for rest, relaxation and avoid excessive noise or disturbances that can stress you out. Third, build healthy social relationships. Create open and supportive communication in your family, school, college, work and social environment. And avoid yourself from a toxic or conflict-filled environment that can trigger stress and anxiety. Fourth, encourage a healthy lifestyle. By building a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly can also contribute to maintaining our mental health. Then encourage a balance between work, study and personal life to avoid burnout. In addition, creating an environment that supports mental health can also be done by participating in personal activities. One way is to develop recreational activities, do meditation exercises, use relaxation techniques, and control stress. A great way to express and manage emotions is by painting, drawing, writing, or making music. With this expressive art activity, we can divert our attention from negative thoughts, make our minds calmer, and make us more connected to ourselves.
In addition, the need for government contribution, the government must provide mental health services because they affect national productivity, can reduce social and economic burdens, and are more effective if handled early. In addition, this service helps to remove the stigma which is a basic right that must be guaranteed by the state. With the right policies, the government can improve public welfare and prevent long-term negative impacts due to mental disorders. Mental health services are not only an individual need, but also a long-term investment for the country. By providing affordable and quality services, the government can improve the quality of life of the community and prevent greater socio-economic impacts, as well as remove the stigma against mental disorders. Therefore, it is time for the government to strengthen mental health policies as an integral part of the national health service system. Good mental health will provide benefits for oneself and others. If mental health is disturbed, it will also have an impact on physical health and a person's quality of life will decrease. The government and society also need to work together to focus on mental health, especially among the younger generation in Indonesia. Because the younger generation is the pillar of this country's relay, they are expected to play a full role in building the progress and social welfare of the country.- Affiliation
