If someone smiles, does it mean their heart is truly happy? Not always. Because many people smile just to hide their pain. Many people seem fine, but inside, they are struggling with their own thoughts. So why do so many people feel alone? Why do more and more people feel like they are not good enough? The answer is not just because they are suffering, but because their environment does not support them. Because they have no place to talk, no space to feel enough, no sense of being valued. Often, it’s not the pain that hurts the most, but the loneliness they feel. This is why we must build an environment that supports mental health. Not just with positive words, not just with encouragement. But with real actions. By ensuring that in our surroundings, no one feels alone. Tana Mallebbireng, Atinna Ripasannrang (A fertile land, a peaceful heart). A mentally healthy environment is not just a physically safe place, but also an emotionally safe one. A place where everyone feels valued, heard, and accepted. Because when someone feels accepted, their pain doesn’t just disappear, but at least they know they don’t have to bear it alone. Such an environment doesn’t form on its own. It takes intention to sipakatau (mutual respect), sipakalebbi (mutual appreciation), and sipakainge’ (mutual reminders). It takes awareness that everyone carries invisible wounds and that everyone deserves to be heard. So, from now on, don’t just say "stay strong" to those who are struggling. Instead, ask them, “What can I do to help you?” Don’t just say, "I’m here for you," but truly be there when they need someone to talk to. Because the world was not meant to be lived in alone. We need each other. We need fertile ground to grow and peaceful hearts to endure.  +
kept away from leaders who are dishonest and unjust.”  +
Creating an environment that supports mental health can be done by building positive relationships and gaining valuable experiences from a young age. Healthy relationships provide emotional support, boost self-confidence, and help manage stress. Meanwhile, positive experiences such as trying new things, facing challenges with a positive mindset, and learning from mistakes help shape a healthier perspective. By fostering meaningful connections and collecting valuable experiences, we can create a more balanced and fulfilling life.  +
Create a mentally healthy environment with open communication, social support, safe spaces, education, and access to help.  +
Mental health awareness is crucial in understanding the importance of emotional, psychological, and social well-being in shaping our thoughts, feelings, and interactions with the world around us. According to Aziz (2022), individuals with good mental health can recognize their potential, manage stress effectively, be productive at work, and radiate positive vibes to those around them. Interestingly, global awareness of mental health has increased significantly in recent years. The Asia Care Survey 2024 found that 56% of respondents experienced stress and burnout. In Indonesia, we still face two major challenges: social stigma and limited access to mental health services. A worrying phenomenon revealed by (link unavailable) showed a 25% increase in anxiety and depression cases globally post-pandemic. If left untreated, this condition can have severe consequences, including decreased productivity, disrupted social relationships, and increased risk of self-harming behaviors. Data from the Ministry of Health revealed a more alarming fact: depression is the leading cause of suicide, which is now the fourth leading cause of death among adolescents worldwide. Unfortunately, many psychological disorders remain undetected and untreated. In response to this situation, the SEHATI (Sehat Mental Bersama Komunitas) community was established. This program offers an integrated mental health support system, combining the roles of students, volunteers, and professional practitioners to create a more supportive environment for mental health. SEHATI provides five main services: empathetic peer support, accessible online assistance, access to experienced professionals, early assessment for detection and prevention, and comprehensive mental health training. This program has the potential to be developed through collaboration with various parties, such as UPTLBK UNM, the Health Department, and mental health professionals. SEHATI aims to bring about positive change by increasing mental health awareness, creating community support, and facilitating access to counseling services. Its uniqueness lies in its community-based approach to mental health recovery and prevention. As an innovative solution, SEHATI not only provides conventional counseling services but also actively promotes mental health awareness. In the future, this program will be expanded to more communities, strengthening partnerships and conducting regular evaluations to improve service quality. Through concrete steps like these, we hope that more people will receive the support they need and lead better lives, both mentally and socially. Let's remember together: maintaining mental health is not selfish, but a necessity! Sumber Gambar: https://pin.it/598UeIAvP
Being far from parents, leaving their comfort zone, and facing a new environment is not easy. Many young people choose to study in another city for a better future, but this decision is often accompanied by doubt. They believe that stepping out of their comfort zone is part of the learning and growth process. However, the question remains: Can they truly adapt? Or will the pressure they face lead to despair? The Indonesia National Adolescent Mental Health Survey (I-NAMHS) 2022 reveals alarming facts. In the past 12 months, 1.4% of adolescents had suicidal thoughts, 0.5% had made suicide plans, and 0.2% had attempted suicide. These numbers prove the pressures faced by adolescents are not to be taken lightly. According to Ana Susanti (in Alexander, 2023), several key factors contribute to rising mental health issues among adolescents. High academic pressure, rapid social changes, uncontrolled social media influence, and high expectations from family often trigger prolonged stress. If not addressed properly, their mental state can deteriorate further, leading to extreme decisions. Many migrant youths struggle to adapt, especially when facing social stigma. They fear being perceived as weak, failures, or incapable of growth. This fear can have negative effects, making them more prone to stress, losing motivation, avoiding social interactions, and often feeling guilty. If left unchecked, this condition can develop into more serious mental health disorders. Ultimately, the key solution lies in a supportive environment. A healthy environment is not only created by family and friendships but also by our own role in shaping it. Effective communication is crucial. Developing the habit of listening with empathy without judgment allows others to express their feelings freely without fear. This attitude not only helps those struggling but also creates a more comfortable atmosphere for ourselves. Change can start with small steps: supporting those around us, breaking the stigma around mental health, and seeking help when feeling overwhelmed. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Adapting to a new environment is challenging, but not impossible. With the right support, every migrant youth can grow and thrive without losing identity. Let’s start with ourselves and be part of the change because mental health is a right for everyone. As a candidate for local leadership, community well-being should be the top priority. Leaders need to focus on building an inclusive and sustainable economy. By creating jobs and expanding education access, they can cut down unemployment and strengthen the local economy, making sure people feel the benefits directly. Affordable and accessible healthcare is crucial, along with access to clean water, decent housing, and solid infrastructure. Social programs for vulnerable groups, like seniors and people with disabilities, need strong support to build trust and security within the community. Finally, commitment to the environment is essential. Climate change has a direct impact on people’s lives, so policies like waste management, renewable energy, and green initiatives must be prioritized. Putting the environment first shows real dedication to a sustainable future.  +
Mental health is often overlooked, despite its significant impact on a person's quality of life, especially for students. Amid academic pressures and expectations from various parties, we, as students, often feel stressed and anxious. Therefore, it is crucial to create an environment that supports mental health, whether at home, at school, or in the surrounding community. One of the first steps to take is to build open and supportive communication. At home, parents need to be a safe space for children to talk about the issues they are facing. At school, teachers also play a vital role in creating a positive atmosphere where students feel valued and understood. When we feel supported, it becomes easier to cope with stress or anxiety. In addition, balancing study time with personal time is equally important. Many students get caught up in a busy study routine, forgetting the importance of time to relax or engage in activities they enjoy. However, if we can manage our time well and make space for ourselves, we can be more productive and focused while studying. Time to rest or hang out with friends can help relieve stress and improve our mood. Equally important is reducing the stigma around mental health issues. Many students are reluctant to talk about their feelings because they fear being seen as weak or different. In reality, mental health is part of overall health. By reducing stigma and being more open, we can support each other and help maintain mental well-being. By fostering open communication, maintaining a balanced life, and reducing stigma, we can create an environment that supports mental health. As students, we need to care more about ourselves and help one another create a more positive and mentally healthy atmosphere.  +
The employment crisis has become an important issue in developing countries, including Indonesia. In Indonesia itself, the issue of the job market crisis is a big problem which can result in many unemployed people, none other than young men and women with graduates. Without realizing it, this can hamper the aspirations of Indonesia itself, namely to become a developed country, because human resources for graduates are only symbols without job opportunities. Problem: The employment crisis can create an imbalance between the number of jobs and the workforce, especially young graduates who tend to want to work in government, causing intense competition and giving rise to a feeling of dilemma for every graduate student, because it is difficult to get a job because of the tight competition, so they have to force and challenge yourself to potentially create your own business beyond the basics. The unemployment rate among youth is quite high, also caused by a lack of skills that match market needs and the high number of college graduates. On the other hand, many industrial sectors lack skilled labor. This creates a mismatch between the qualifications young people have and what employers are looking for. Apart from that, there are also cultural factors that influence, such as the perception that jobs in the formal sector are more prestigious, even though the informal sector also offers opportunities. This crisis is not only an economic problem, but also affects the mental health and future of the younger generation. Therefore, collaboration between government, the private sector and educational institutions is needed to create effective solutions, such as targeted training programs and increasing access to entrepreneurship. The problem of mismatch between industrial needs and the qualifications of the new workforce, especially generation Z, has given rise to the dilemma of increasing unemployment rates in Indonesia. The Indonesian Minister of Manpower said that the statistics for the largest group of unemployed were vocational school graduates, the percentage was 8.9%. Not only that, BPS data also shows that the generation born from 1997 to 2010 is the main contributor to unemployment and the TPT is 16.82%. Apindo also reported that weaknesses emerged in capital-intensive industries and labor-intensive industries in absorbing employment. With data like this, a sense of dilemma arises and becomes a paradox or challenge so that Gen-Z youth tend to become informal rather than formal sector workers. They will create flexible work without being bound by time and place and perhaps for them there will be satisfaction in the income they earn, for example being a content creator, YouTuber and other social media platforms. An informal sector like this can become a small business for Gen-Z. Seeing the situation and changes in work styles like this, regional government extensions should immediately pay attention to this situation. There are definitely two options, namely first, the government supports the informal sector, by strengthening economic infrastructure through technology and innovation, although technology can reduce the need for labor in some formal sectors, innovation can also create new jobs but with the consequence, taxes are not imposed on the informal sector . Or secondly, the government must create productive employment opportunities through increasing education and investment training in vocational education and training that is relevant to the needs of the job market. Appropriate skills training programs can help the workforce adapt to technological and industry changes. The importance of paying attention to the issue of the employment crisis is especially from the perspective of regional governments or regional leaders. Many do not work and are unemployed. High unemployment rates can cause a variety of social problems, including poverty, crime, and mental health problems. There is a need for government collaborative efforts to develop solutions that can help answer the dilemmas and paradoxes of Indonesian Gen-Z youth. Don't let unemployment be the absolute answer because usually unemployment is never seen as a problem in itself. Unemployment is considered a problem, because this will create other problems, such as poverty, increased crime, and so on. In other words, unemployment is never seen as a problem in itself. In itself, unemployment is actually a paradox: people do not work, but their minds are filled with work, precisely the desire to get a job. Physical and mental exercise to get a job is actually work too. The common sense statement: lawyers (unemployment many events) shows exactly the paradoxical side of unemployment. In an unemployed person's free time, his mind is filled with work. The question is: Why is work so important? Is it about money? Maybe the answer is yes. However, we believe that work is not just about money, but about satisfaction which also includes trust, recognition and pride.
In my opinion, one way to create a mentally supportive environment is by **Building Healthy Communication**, which includes: - Supporting each other and not being judgmental when someone shares their feelings. - Listening with empathy without immediately giving judgmental solutions and respecting others' opinions. Additionally, we can also **Encourage a Healthy Lifestyle** by: - Maintaining a balanced diet and getting enough sleep. - Engaging in physical activities such as exercising or taking walks. - Limiting exposure to social media that can negatively impact mental health (avoiding excessive phone use for unnecessary things), as it can help reduce stress and maintain mental balance. Another way is by praying five times a day, which is highly beneficial for us. For example, always praying after each salah—praying is like confiding in Allah, which helps us feel more at peace and happy in our daily lives.  +
In my opinion, the main priority for a regional head candidate should be improving community welfare through better healthcare services, quality education, and adequate infrastructure. Additionally, they should focus on transparency and combating corruption to establish a clean and integrity-based government.  +
Increase Awareness and Education: Conduct public campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of mental health. - Provide educational programs in schools, workplaces, and communities on how to maintain mental health.  +
Makassar has great potential to become a better city. However, poverty is still a major obstacle in achieving this goal. This condition not only affects the quality of life of the poor, but can also hinder the overall economic growth of the city. Many factors cause high poverty rates in Makassar, such as rapid population growth, limited employment opportunities, lack of access to education and health, and natural disasters. The Makassar city government has implemented programs to overcome poverty, but there are still many challenges to be faced in poverty alleviation. The challenges that still exist today are inaccurate poverty data, coordination between institutions, and changes in socio-economic conditions. From the programs that have been carried out by the government, there are successes and shortcomings. The success of several programs such as PKH, KIP, and KIS have succeeded in reducing poverty rates significantly and the shortcomings of inaccurate poverty data often cause programs to be off-target. For example, PKH has succeeded in increasing the school participation rate of children from poor families in Makassar. However, there are still challenges in ensuring that the assistance received is actually used to meet the needs of children, such as buying books or school supplies, there is also the development of MSMEs in Makassar has succeeded in increasing the income of several community groups, especially women. However, not all MSMEs that are developed can survive in the long term, and Clean Makassar has succeeded in improving the cleanliness of the city, but has not fully impacted the reduction of poverty rates. The solution could be in the form of increasing social assistance and food price stability, which are short-term solutions. The long-term solution is bureaucratic reform Improving the bureaucratic system to be more efficient and responsive to the needs of the community and sustainable economic development Encouraging inclusive and sustainable economic growth, Reducing dependence on limited natural resources. It can also carry out Government, Private, and Community Cooperation by Forming partnerships to manage resources effectively and efficiently or Partnerships with the Business World by Building partnerships with the business world to create new jobs. For example, one of the cities with a low poverty rate is in North Sulawesi, Manado, because Manado is the center of the economy and trade. and the tourism sector is also quite developed in several areas. From the many cases in the city of Makassar regarding poverty, it is hoped that the prospective regional head of Makassar city must improve the existing poverty alleviation program, so that the level of poverty in the city of Makassar is reduced and with good cooperation between the government, private sector, and the community, we are sure that Makassar can become a more prosperous and inclusive city.
Essentially, we are all humans with needs, and our needs are politicized through a system and legal mechanisms that have been agreed upon as binding norms for all layers of society to enable social life and governance among all individuals who adopt their own beliefs and thoughts. In a democratic republic, the election of local leaders is necessary so that they can protect and serve the community well in each region. What crosses my mind as I pass by hundreds of billboards for candidates for local leaders, legislators, and other positions is simple: "Are they chosen based on their quality or the quantity of votes?" Over time, I feel that we should start proposing a selection mechanism for local elections, legislative candidates, and all government positions based on the quantity of public votes. Let us understand together that in a country that claims to be democratic, everyone's voice is considered equally valuable because every individual has the same voting rights and participation before the law, regardless of their position, background, or intellectual ability. This is a form of state justice in fulfilling the equality rights of society in political participation. Unfortunately, this opportunity is often misused by various individuals who we might currently see as influential people selected through an election process that is not free from vote-buying. This occurs because many people are apathetic and unaware that their right to vote and be heard is valuable and can directly impact their lives, especially among the lower middle class, whose basic rights are often not well met, leading them to not think long-term about politics; their main concern is how to ensure they can eat tomorrow. The worst-case scenario is when those trusted to uphold the aspirations of the people misuse their power to benefit their own group because their rise to power is tainted and lacks cognitive or intellectual scrutiny. There is concern that as they grow and become entrenched in our government, they will maintain and exploit the powerlessness of the community, reducing the ability of younger generations to critique by leveraging their authority to keep the public misled. We cannot avoid or completely eliminate such practices, as many continue to engage in political campaigning, which is their right as citizens, as long as it does not involve gross misconduct. Returning to the main question: Are local leaders elected based on their quality or the quantity of votes? For now, they are indeed chosen based on the dominant quantity among all candidates, and at least if unclean practices are employed, those elected can still be beneficial if accompanied by a selection mechanism prioritizing knowledge and the candidates' thinking abilities. A rough outline of the selection mechanism; firstly, anyone wishing to run should undergo a test or selection process that can assess their problem-solving abilities, such as knowledge of social issues, followed by case studies to demonstrate how they would address them as someone in authority. This would be followed by testing general knowledge in various fields such as economics, the environment, education, and health, assessing how they respond verbally and spontaneously. They would be confirmed to run until all candidates are present to design programs that will have a significant impact on the population in their region before they are elected and take office, potentially forming a special team from the province for this purpose. The author's hope is that with transparent and clean testing and bureaucracy open to the public, the results of this selection will yield positive outcomes for society, regardless of which candidate is elected. We need leaders who are truly competent and innovative in addressing social issues. Hopefully, this proposal can be realized by policymakers and supported by local leaders for future candidates.
"Wounded Souls: When Development Doesn't Touch the Mental" Mental Health: An Invisible Emergency. We talk about infrastructure development, economic growth, and technological advancements. But, have we ever stopped to ask, what about the health of our minds? The numbers speak louder than the rhetoric of progress. One in five adults in Indonesia struggles with mental disorders. The pandemic arrived, not only bringing a virus, but also a crisis of anxiety and depression that swept across the nation. These are not mere statistics; these are unheard cries, invisible wounds. Family: The First Fortress, A School of Love. Home should be a sanctuary, not a source of pain. Family is the first school, where love and acceptance should be the core curriculum. Teach children about emotions, not just about numbers and letters. Introduce them to a "vocabulary of feelings" so they know how to recognize and express what's within their souls. Don't let stigma silence those who are struggling. Schools, where children spend most of their time, should be empowering environments, not intimidating ones. Teachers are not just conveyors of knowledge, but also caregivers who are sensitive to changes in students' behavior. Hold relevant mental health education programs that don't just talk about theory, but also touch the reality of students' lives. Society: An Ecosystem That (Should) Care. Society is where we live, interact, and should care for one another. But, too often, we become sources of pain for our fellow human beings. The stigma against mental health issues remains strong. Those who are struggling are often ostracized, not embraced. Social media, which should be a space for sharing, has instead become a stage for unhealthy comparisons, where bullying and harassment run rampant. Collaboration: The Key to Change, Not Just a Slogan. Creating an environment that supports mental health is a collective effort, not the task of one party alone. Families, schools, communities, governments, and related organizations must act together, not just talk. The government must step up with policies that side with mental health, not just focus on physical development. This is not just about numbers; it's about people. Mental health is the foundation of a nation's quality of life. If our minds are fragile, how can we possibly build a strong country? Let's start today, this very moment. Be a good listener, lend a hand to those in need, and never underestimate the power of words. Because, mental health is an investment in our shared future.
